happy labor day
According to the Department of Labor, Labor Day is celebrated as a National Holiday and a tribute to the contributions that workers have made to our country's strength, prosperity, and growth. Coal, Steel, or automobiles, labor made it happen. That's right, unlike President Obama's remarks- we DID build that, with minimal government involvement.
Labor Day was first recognized by a handful of states in 1885-1886. By June of 1887, following recognition by 23 states, Congress passed an act declaring the first Monday in September to be a legal holiday now known as Labor Day.
While we no longer maintain the festivities of the original Labor Day as celebrated with large parades, remarks from union leaders, and mass displays or celebration, Labor Day is a reminder of how vital to our security, economic development, and prosperity "the working class" is to America. The song "40 Hour Week" by Alabama, summarizes this perfectly.
Laborers across the nation work very hard in manufacturing, mining, and factories. Without these jobs, America would not be the country she is today. Systematically, we have begun to loose many of these jobs to overseas rivals by way of horrendous trade agreements, crippling regulations, politically-driven environmental regulations, and the highest corporate tax rate in the world.
It is no small wonder why we see many vacant and abandoned mills, factories, and plants. These, often derelict, structures once provided jobs for hundreds or thousands of families in communities across our great nation, and was the soul of US production for our nation and we led in exports for several products.
Enjoy this Labor Day and reflect on the countless workers who work very hard in "less then desirable" jobs producing quality products. It goes without saying to honor these contributions by electing American Made goods as often as possible.
Rockdale BOC Millage Rate Increase, Do-Over
The Rockdale BOC recently held three public meetings in accordance with state law. These meetings were sparsely attended by voters and resulted in a 2-1 Vote to INCREASE property taxes. The two yay votes applauded one another with statements of "this took courage" and "this was a smart decision." Absent from these discussions were the reduction of expenses to off-set revenue shortages. Such discussions could have included eliminating the $100K+ lobbyist on the BOC staff, reduction in pay for commissioners, or reduction of departments. As we do in our household budgets and reduce expenses to balance our budgets, shouldn't the government also do the same?
This same board who cannot simply file the paperwork correctly, now wants to ask you again for more of your hard-earned money. In a bit of irony, in their mistake, they will waste tax dollars in asking for an increase of tax dollars.
The good news is that this gives citizens another opportunity, with more notice, to make his or her voice heard.
As Republicans, we are opposed to any increase in taxes that is not approved via a public referendum. Stay tuned as we provide you more details and topics of discussion when you attend the meetings. Please make every effort to attend and spread the word to your neighbors to also attend. The public meetings will be in the Rockdale Assembly Hall located at 901 Main Street, Conyers. The dates are as follows:
Wednesday, Sept 9, 9:00am and 6:00pm
Tuesday, Sept 20 at 9:00am
Tuesday, Sept 20 at 10:00am Called Meeting to vote on and set the millage rate for 2016.
September 10, 8:00am: Fuzz Run, Covington Georgia. The 4th District will sponsor a booth and provide campaign materials for all of our candidates. All of the candidates would LOVE your help to work the crowds and meet as many voters as possible. The event has a large crowd from surrounding counties.
