Dear rockdale republicans
Our next meeting will be held on September 1st, 2016 at 6:30pm at Amici's on Parker Road. We will be joined by a member of the Donald Trump and Mike Pence campaign to provide highlights and updates from the campaign. Trump-Pence are the Republican Presidential and Vice-Presidential nominees for the Republican Party.
Please plan to meet to socialize and eat around 6:00pm and prepare for the meeting to begin at 6:30. You are encouraged to eat before the meeting so that we can minimize traffic during the meeting so that everyone has a chance to ask questions and listen to the speakers.
We will also have Walk of Heroes Raffle tickets available. More details can be found by clicking here.
Please consider making a donation or purchase raffle tickets to help the Phase II restoration of this memorial. This memorial celebrates the lives of our Rockdale County Heroes that have fallen. There are some great prizes including guns and ammo. Bring cash or make checks payable to Rockdale County Republican Party. Tickets are $5per ticket or $25 for 6 tickets. All proceeds will be used for restoration efforts. The drawing will be held on September 10th and you need NOT be present to win. The restoration plans can be found on the Wal of Heroes website, www.walkofheroes.org
Those plans can be found on their website.
Rockdale County Strategic Survey
By Larry Johnson
The Rockdale Board of Commissioners took a survey from Feb 3 to March 15 2016. There were 30 questions to help them determine what the good folks of Rockdale want or expect [of their county] in the near future of their county.
There were only 1657 survey takers. That would seem like a very few to determine anything from but that is what was collected.
One interesting question was about how to pay for future improvements like a new county government complex. Bonds, not being a popular answer. Only 33% want to use bonds to fund the new building.
My question is, how much money have we begun to save for this kind of improvement? If we don't have the money to make such grand improvements, where are we going to get it in the near future to pay it back with interest? If you can't afford to save money to put towards a new complex, you can't afford to pay it back with interest. I'm just saying.
Among the other possible answers in the survey, bank loan, self-fund, public/private partnership and the one that received the most response was “Don't Know” at 35%. The bottom line is, we don't want a three person board to get us in serious debt and then turn around and say that they have to raise our taxes to pay for it.
Another point of interest in the survey was that folks tend to prefer single-family homes rather than multi-family dwellings like apartments and townhouses. The dense housing of apartments makes more money for the land owner and more taxes for the county initially, but before long the dense housing cost us all more in police and fire departments as well as insurance rates. Look around the country. Dense housing is not what we want.

Rockdale BOC Votes 2-1 to Approve a 4%+ increase in property taxes
August 25th, 2016 the Rockdale BOC voted and approved a property tax increase. It should be noted that the Democratic board did have one vote in opposition and that was by Chairman-Elect Oz Nesbitt. Williams "it was a hard decision and we need to be smart about increasing taxes and not dip into savings." Outgoing Chairman Oden stated "the vote took courage"
Besides the further burden of poor financial management becoming a more expensive problem solved by property owners, the turnout for the public meetings to discuss this increase was met with very few people. It was reported that the biggest turn-out was less than two dozen citizens.
In short, the county continues to poorly manage public funds. A typical Democratic response to budget shortfalls (often made by previous poor approvals) is to raise taxes. Unlike the private sector or a household budget, the concept of "reduce expenses" seems to be foreign. If we could all simply give ourselves a raise to meet our budget shortfalls, we could then be like our Democrat led board of commisioners.
This further highlights the need for citizens to be engaged with our local government by attending public meetings and staying informed. Remember, our voice determines what decision our local government makes. Our lack of opposition provides the message of "consent" and provides a pass for the board to make these decisions. Remember, their budget is YOUR money. Use your voice to determine how your money is spent in Rockdale County.
Together we can make a difference if we stay engaged, keep our neighbors and fellow citizens informed, and work to hold our officials accountable.
